Efficient extraction of a collimated ultra-cold neutron beam using diffusive channels
We present a first experimental demonstration of a new method to extract a wellcollimated beam of ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) from a storage vessel. Neutrons with too large divergence are not removed from the beam by an absorbing collimation, but a diffuse or semidiffuse channel with high Fermi potential reflects them back into the vessel. This avoids unnecessary losses and keeps the storage time...
متن کاملUltra-cold atomic hydrogen beam
We investigated two methods of producing a continuous free beam of electron-spin polarized atomic hydrogen, using a 7.5 T solenoid magnetic field and a helium film-coated cell . The first method involves accumulating H 1 at high field in a 300 mK storage cell and flipping the electron spin by using microwaves to drive a hyperfine transition . The resulting HT atoms are accelerated and focused b...
متن کاملA graphite-moderated pulsed spallation ultra-cold neutron source
Proposals exist and efforts are under way to construct pulsed spallation ultra-cold neutron (UCN) sources at accelerator laboratories around the world. At the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), Switzerland, and at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), U.S.A., it is planned to use solid deuterium (SD2) for the UCN production from cold neutrons. The philosophies about how the cold neutrons are ob...
متن کاملThe Spallation Target for the Ultra Cold Neutron Source Ucn
A source of ultra cold neutrons, based on the spallation process is under construction at PSI. With the help of a fast kicker the whole ~1 MW proton beam (590 MeV, 2 mA) from the accelerator will be switched onto the UCN spallation target for approximately 8 seconds every 15 minutes. The spallation neutrons are thermalized in a large heavywater moderator at room temperature and further cooled i...
متن کاملMixed Diffusive-Convective Relaxation of a Warm Beam of Energetic Particles in Cold Plasma
This work addresses the features of fast particle transport in the bump-on-tail problem for varying the width of the fluctuation spectrum, in the view of possible applications to studies of energetic particle transport in fusion plasmas. Our analysis is built around the idea that strongly-shaped beams do not relax through diffusion only and that there exists an intermediate time scale where the...
